You should all have received a copy of our excellent recent Estyn revisit report.  A copy is also available on Moodle if you have not received your copy.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our non-uniform day to raise money for the unfortunate children in Nepal.  Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to send £239.25 to unicef.
Performances
Key Stage 2 children have been working very hard with their performance of ‘The Pride of Coedpenmaen’.  Tickets are selling fast – so if you wish to purchase some extra, I recommend you place your order as soon as possible so that you won’t be disappointed.  The children will be performing at Hawthorn High School at 6pm on Wednesday 1st July and Thursday 2nd July.
Generally, photographs for school and family use can be a source of memories, pleasure and pride. We believe they can enhance self-esteem for children as well as their families.  As a result, the school would like to record the performances as a record of the hard work the children have put in, and as a celebration of the performance, which I am sure will be fantastic.  Please Note: if there are any objections the school will, unfortunately, not be able to allow any recording of the concert.
Year 5 have been invited to take part in a ‘cluster’ performance of Bugsy Malone.  This will be on 7th July, again at Hawthorn High.
New classes from September 2015
Following a review of pupil numbers, it will be necessary to have a number of ‘mixed classes’ from September.  This is normal practice in primary schools.  Class lists are currently being finalised, and parents will be informed of their child’s next class within the next 2 weeks.  Classes and their teachers will be:
Class

Year 6
Willow Class

I am aware that mixed classes can cause concern for some parents.  However, all pupils are taught to their stage of development, regardless of their age, whilst teachers continue to challenge them throughout their time with us at Coedpenmaen.  We teach a skills based curriculum as demanded by Welsh Government and recently approved by Estyn, so whilst similar age children may cover different ‘topics’, they will be taught the same skills across the academic year.
Especially important to note is the Year 3/2 class split.  Year 3 children in this class will access the same break times/assembly/lunchtimes as other Year 3 children.  They will also be included in Junior school activities (e.g. Junior Christmas celebrations, summer school trip etc.)  As they will be completing work in a different ’topic’, they may occasionally access a different ‘class’ trip related to the topic being studied.
Welsh Government Assessments – the results of the WG tests will be sent home with the school reports. Please remember that these tests only reflect 30 minutes of your child in school.  The school continues to assess your child regularly using the work they complete in class to give a more ‘rounded’ picture of how your child is progressing.  Children in Years 2 and 6 will also bring home their end of ‘phase’ assessments.

Attendance
It is disappointing that our attendance continues to fall just below the target set for us by the Local Authority, and as highlighted in our Estyn Report.  Please make every effort to send your child to school over the last few weeks of term – we still have a lot of interesting work to complete!
We still have a number of Microsoft Office codes available for those families who wish to use this free offer.  Just send your email address to school and we can forward the details to you.
As usual, if you have any concerns please contact the class teacher or myself.  Remember to check out our Moodle and Blog to find out our winners of Seren yr Wythnos / Star of the Week as well as keep up-to-date with school activities.        Mrs Loveridge

"Pride of Coedpenmaen" - school performance

17th June 2015
Dear Parent/Carer

“PRIDE OF COEDPENMAEN” – performed at Hawthorn High School

The children are working extremely hard at school in preparation of our performance of “Pride of Coedpenmaen”.

As you are aware, our school hall is too small to include all the children in a production and to invite families to watch.  We are, therefore, fortunate to be able to use the theatre at Hawthorn High School where the children will have the opportunity to perform on a ‘real’ stage with stage lighting and provide ample provision for parents’/family parking.

As the children will need a chance to practice at the high school to become familiar with the stage direction, we have arranged for the juniors to go to the High School for the day on Wednesday 1st July.   The buses will leave school just after 9.00am and return in time for the end of the school day.  The children will need a packed lunch, drinks and snacks for the day as they will not be able to access the canteen facilities at the school.  They will also need to wear school uniform.

The children are really looking forward to the opportunities this presents and we all look forward to seeing you at the performances on the 1st June or 2nd June to share in the excitement.

Yours,

Mrs J Loveridge

Headteacher
